Privacy policy
Last updated 31 October 2026
The short version
- We use your Google account only to give you an account: your name, email address and a Google ID.
- Your game progress is saved in your own browser, not on our servers.
- To run the game, your answers (typed, or spoken and then transcribed) are sent to AI services that write the reporters’ questions and the coverage. We keep a log of answers to improve the game, and it does not record who gave them.
- No advertising, no analytics trackers and no selling of data. The only cookies are the ones needed to keep you signed in.
Who we are
In the Presser is run by Wol Akec, an individual based in the United Kingdom, who is the controller of your personal data under UK data protection law. You can reach us at [email protected] about anything in this policy.
What we collect, and why
| What | Why | Lawful basis |
|---|---|---|
| Your name, email address and Google account ID, when you sign in with Google | To create your account and keep you signed in | Contract: providing the game you signed up for |
| Session and sign-in cookies, stored as one-way hashes on our side | To keep you signed in and to complete Google sign-in safely | Contract |
| A one-way hash of your IP address, kept for a short time | To limit repeated sign-in attempts and protect the service from abuse | Legitimate interests: security |
| Your answers and the questions they responded to | To run each briefing (see below), and, without any link to your account, to test and improve how the game reads answers | Contract, and legitimate interests: improving the game |
| Your voice, if you play by voice | To turn what you say into text, and to play your own words in the evening news report. We do not keep your recordings. | Contract |
| Subscription details: a Stripe customer ID, subscription status and renewal date. Card details go straight to Stripe and never reach us. | To unlock paid content and manage your subscription | Contract, and legal obligation for payment records |
| Which invite link you used, and when your pass from it ends | To give you the access the invite grants | Contract |
Your game progress (which scenarios you have played, your results and training progress) is saved in your browser’s local storage on your device. We do not receive it, and clearing your browser data removes it.
How your answers are handled
The game works by reading what you say and responding to it. When you answer a question:
- if you speak, your recording is sent to a speech-to-text service to be transcribed. We don’t keep it: the recording stays in your browser for the rest of your visit, so the evening news report can play your own words. To make that report, the one recording it quotes is sent to our server, cut to the quote and returned to you, and not stored;
- the text of your answer is sent to AI services that judge how it relates to the question and write the reporters’ follow-ups, the published coverage and the reactions;
- a copy of the answer, the question and the game’s reading of it is added to a log on our server. That log records the scenario and the reporter, but not your name, email, account or IP address. We use it to build test cases and improve the game. In voice mode, the TV news report made from a briefing, which quotes your answers, is also cached on the server, again without any link to you.
Because the log is not linked to your account, we cannot pick out your answers to send to you or delete. Please don’t include anyone’s personal information, including your own, in your answers. The game is set in a fictional country and never needs it.
Who we share data with
We use these kinds of service providers to run the game. They process data on our behalf and under their own security and data protection commitments. We do not sell personal data or share it for advertising. If you’d like the names of the specific providers we currently use, email us and we’ll tell you.
| Who | What for | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting and database providers | Running the game’s server and storing account records, in the EU | Everything the server handles; account, session, subscription and invite records |
| Sign-in with Google, and web fonts | Your Google sign-in; your IP address when your browser loads the fonts | |
| Speech services | Transcribing spoken answers, and voicing the reporters and the news report | Your recordings; the lines the reporters and newsreaders speak |
| AI language services | Reading your answers, and writing the reporters’ questions, the coverage and the reactions | The briefing so far, including your answers, and the scenario’s facts |
| Our payment provider (Stripe) | Payments, if you subscribe | Your email, name and payment details |
| Network providers | Our domain and its DNS | No personal data beyond ordinary network information |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of people or the service.
International transfers
Our server and database are in the EU. Some providers, including the speech and AI language services, Google and our payment provider, may process data in the United States or elsewhere. Where they do, we rely on the safeguards UK law provides for, such as the UK–US data bridge, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or standard contractual clauses offered by those providers.
How long we keep it
- Your account: until you ask us to delete it.
- Sign-in sessions: up to 30 days, or until you sign out.
- The answer log: as long as it is useful for improving the game. It contains no account details.
- Payment records: as long as the law requires, normally six years.
- Voice recordings: never stored by us. They stay in your browser until you leave or reload the page.
Cookies
We only use cookies that are strictly necessary for the service: one to keep you signed in, one that lasts a few minutes while you sign in with Google, and one that holds an invite code until you redeem it. There are no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, so we don’t ask for cookie consent. The game also saves your progress in your browser’s local storage, as described above.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to give you a copy in a portable form. To do any of these, email [email protected] from the address on your account. We will reply within one month. Deleting your account removes your account, sessions and invite records; payment records are kept where the law requires.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to sort it out first.
Children
You must be 13 or older to use In the Presser. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has signed up, contact us and we will delete the account.
Security
Connections to the game are encrypted, session tokens and invite codes are stored only as one-way hashes, and access to our systems is restricted. No service is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and will tell you if a breach affects you where the law requires.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when what we collect or how we use it changes, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the game or by email.
